SRINAGAR: The weather service forecasted scattered to fairly widespread light rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours on Thursday.
According to the meteorological department, the official news agency GNS predicted scattered light rain and snow for the next two days.
In terms of temperature, he stated that Srinagar recorded a low of 1.6°C, the same as the previous night, and that it was 0.1°C above normal for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, had a low of 0.2°C, the same as the previous night, and was 0.2°C below normal for Kashmir's gateway town.
Pahalgam, he said, had a low of minus 3.2°C, compared to minus 3.8°C the night before, and it was 0.3°C above normal for the popular tourist resort in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
According to officials, Kokernag recorded a low of 2.5°C compared to 2.0°C the previous night, and it was 2.4°C above normal for the area.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.0°C, down from minus 3.4°C the night before, and was 4.8°C above normal for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, he said.
He said the mercury settled at minus 0.3°C in Kupwara town, compared to 0.2°C the previous night, and it was 0.3°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu recorded a low of 11.2°C, compared to 10.2°C the night before. He said the temperature was 0.6°C 'below' normal for J&K's winter capital.
Banihal recorded a low of 6.4°C (4.2°C above normal), Batote 8.0°C (4.5°C above normal), Katra 11.6°C (2.1°C above normal), and Bhadarwah 3.7°C (2.9°C above normal).
Leh and Kargil in Ladakh recorded lows of minus 9.0°C and 12.4°C, respectively, according to the official.
While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day-long harsh winter period that began on December 21 and a 20-day-long period known as 'Chillai-Khurd' that followed it have ended, Kashmir is still gripped by a 10-day-long period known as 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold) that ends on March 1.
