The prices of petrol and diesel in India were hiked by 80 paise per litre again on Wednesday. Earlier, on Tuesday, the rates saw an 80 paise rise, after a record 137 days of remaining unchanged.

With elections due in five states, fuel prices remained unchanged from November 2021 to March 2022 despite global crude oil rates touching multi-year highs. However, many had been anticipating a rise in prices as a result of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.

In India, petrol and diesel prices depend on various factors such as demand for fuel, valuation of INR against USD and consumption ratio of refineries.

The prices of petrol and diesel vary from state to state, depending on local taxes like value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges.
